Inside The Green Lobby with Bernard Melewski and Brad Edmondson set for Oct. 18

The Kelly Adirondack Center will host an upcoming program called “Inside The Green Lobby with Bernard Melewski and Brad Edmondson” on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. at Karp 105, Union College Campus. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be available beginning at 5 p.m. Retired lobbyist Bernard Melewski, author of Inside The Green Lobby, and journalist Brad Edmondson, author of A Wild Idea, will team up to tell a story about how politics made strange bedfellows in the Adirondack Park.

Between 1990 and 1994, a state commission’s spectacular failure forced a new coalition of activists, brokers, and elected officials to come together.  They would protect a million acres of the Park over the next decade.

‘Out of harmony with forest lands in their wild state’

Article 14 of NYS constitutionPreviously, the Almanack has asked “which side are you on” when it comes to a court case involving Article 14, the “forever wild” provision of our state constitution.

Recently, dueling press releases from plaintiff Protect the Adirondacks and the Adirondack Mountain Club, Open Space Institute, Adirondack Council, Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter and Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve, the group I work for – indeed suggest that all of us are retreating to our separate corners.

In truth we are longstanding and natural allies and proponents of the “forever wild” provision and much else. Politicization has not completely engulfed the world of wild nature – yet.

When Lightning Strikes: Evening of performances by world-renowned poets

Rural meets urban, when the Adirondack Center for Writing and Bowery Poetry Club collaborate for a brand new event. When Lightning Strikes has been designed to introduce new poets to Adirondack audiences, and new audiences to Bowery Poetry Club poets.

When Lightning Strikes is taking place at 7 p.m. November 9, and hosted by Jive Poetic, featuring Mahogany L. Browne, Adam Falkner, Carlos Andrés Gómez, Omar Holmon, Cynthia Dewi Oka, and Ramya Ramana. The event is live online at the Bowery Poetry Club’s website and live on Facebook. All are invited to tune in for a sliding scale donation of $5-15 payable at paypal.me/adkctr4writing to be split between the two organizations.

Ticonderoga Historical Society Presents: Fake News and Fisticuffs

The Ticonderoga Historical Society will present “Fake News and Fisticuffs – Nothing New in American Politics,” a free public program to be held on Friday, Sept. 25 6 p.m. at the Hancock House, 6 Moses Circle, Ticonderoga.

This program — closing out a recent lecture series — will highlight the history of the fake news and violence that has been present throughout the ages in American politics, and how neither is unique to today’s political environment.
