You’ve probably been to fund-raising events where artwork has been donated. This is a tradition that many artists feel is an important way to show their support for an organization or cause. Sometimes art is also used as a publicity tool, with pieces created specifically for a purpose or cause. Many historians have credited Frederick Church, and other 19th century artists, with helping promote the creation of the National Park system, through their paintings of places like Yellowstone and Yosemite. Hudson River School painters shared with the world the beauty of the Adirondack and Catskill regions.
AdkAction just hosted the first Keeseville Plein Air Festival, to draw attention to the historic community, the beautiful Ausable River, and flourishing area farms, and to raise funds for a downtown revitalization project. It was very successful.
This August, during the 2017 Adirondack Plein Air Festival (August 14-19), there is a new cause that we will be drawing attention to through art. The Friends of Eagle Island, who now own the beautiful and historic camp on Eagle Island, in Upper Saranac Lake, have big dreams and a huge renovation/restoration task ahead of them. » Continue Reading.
The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation began in 1998 and was run out of Executive Director Nina Schoch’s residence before moving in with Adirondack Hamlets to Huts in 2016. In April, the organization received its non-profit status and a new location for its center at 15 Broadway in Saranac Lake.
Hotel Saranac was built in 1927, and opened its doors on July 1 of that year. Now celebrating its 90th year, it remains the last of the grand hotels that once populated Saranac Lake. 
Repairs and rehabilitation work on the Lower Locks in the Saranac Chain have been completed and the locks will be open for use on July 1.
It is easy to get discouraged when our village leaders lead us in the wrong direction, as they have by allowing a grotesquely oversized hotel to take over Lake Flower. But despite their inability to appreciate what makes Saranac Lake unique, they cannot alter an irreversible trend.
Saranac Lake artists are opening their workspaces to the public for additional weekends this year in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Saranac Lake ArtWorks’ popular Studio Tours.
The Saranac Lake Farmers’ Market has opened its 2017 season. The market, which takes place at Riverside Park in downtown Saranac Lake, operates on Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm. The market is a rain or shine event and continues through mid-October.
The Hotel Saranac, which first opened its doors in 1927, has been recognized by the Historic Hotels of America, an official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is one of 295 hotels listed.
People interested in paddlesports will once again have a full slate of activities to choose from in Saranac Lake during the month of June.
The Hotel Saranac will host a job fair on May 30 and 31, in the Saranac Lake Free Library’s Cantwell Community Room. Positions are being filled in all areas, including restaurant, sales, retail boutique, spa and salon, maintenance, housekeeping, guest services and banquets.
The 1st Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake will host the 4th Annual Pete Seeger Tribute on May 6th, at 7 pm. The beginning part of the program will focus on children, while the rest of the evening will consist of music and spoken-word performances for all ages.
The Saranac Lake Downtown Advisory Board is surveying locals, seasonal residents and visitors to provide input on possible improvements or expansions to the downtown retail area.
