In celebration of the 2023 World University Games, which are based in Lake Placid this coming January, the Adirondack Artists Guild is hosting a special exhibit, “Winter Games.” Several artists have been invited to participate, including photographers who have photographed Olympic Games and World Cup events in the past.

The 2023 musical lineup features fan favorites and pairs them up with unbelievably talented opening acts. Annie in the Water will kick things off Friday, February 3 with high energy jams, funky tones, and chill vibes.
SARANAC LAKE, NY — The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has announced that the regional nonprofit has been selected by the New York State Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to establish its new Regional Clean Energy Hubs Program in the North Country. ANCA will work closely with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties and SUNY Canton Career Ready Education and Success Training (CREST) to administer the $4,099,404 award and bring clean energy programs and workforce development opportunities to North Country residents, homeowners, and businesses.
The project supports Governor Kathy Hochul’s nation-leading climate goals outlined in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, as well as the State’s commitment to deliver at least 35 percent of the benefits from clean energy investments, with a goal of 40 percent, to disadvantaged communities and help advance an equitable clean energy transition for all New Yorkers.
SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. — National Grid has awarded $100,000 to the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) to support the regional nonprofit’s North Country Center for Businesses in Transition (CBIT) and a skills-building and networking conference for business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. The grant award will advance the CBIT partnership’s ongoing work supporting local business transitions, including its Small Communities. Saranac Lake, NY. America’s grasslands and shrublands are disappearing due to the intensification of agriculture and abandonment and development of farms. As we lose these open and shrubby habitats, we are also losing the grassland and shrubland birds that depend on them. Of the estimated three billion birds that have disappeared in the U.S. and Canada over the past 50 years, grassland and shrubland bird populations have been the most devastated. This makes the small and fragmented farmscapes of the northeast especially important.
Northern New York Audubon (NNYA) hopes to partner with local farms in our territory to improve these special habitats. NNYA’s new Small Farm Grant program will provide grants of up to $1,500 to farmers in the St Lawrence and Champlain Valleys and Northern Adirondacks to improve bird-friendly habitats and management practices on their lands.
Saranac Lake – Award nominations for BroadwayWorld just posted and Pendragon Theatre has received 19 that cover multiple categories from this past season, including Best Director of a Musical, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical and Play, and Favorite Local Theatre. The past summer included the hit musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the comedy Circle Mirror Transformation, and a new play The Woods. Frozen Jr. also received nominations in the non-professional category as the Camp Pendragon children’s production.
SARANAC LAKE — The North Country Chronic Disease Prevention Coalition is honoring two Rural Health Champions for this year’s National Rural Health Day: Julie Cooke and Jerome James.

The day showcases the efforts of providers, organizations, and stakeholders, and highlights the unique challenges that rural communities face in delivering quality healthcare.
LAKE PLACID, NY (November 15, 2022) – The Lake Placid Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism will host a Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games information session on Monday, November 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Lake Placid Conference Center, second floor. Area residents and business owners are encouraged to attend.
The event will share information about regional plans and preparations for the 11-day international, multi-sport and multi-location event taking place from January 12-22, 2023. Presenters include representatives from Adirondack Sports Council along with the NYS Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA).
SARANAC LAKE, NY—The Abortion Access Committee of Adirondack Voters for Change is proud to present a second screening of the prize-winning feature film “Happening” at BluSeed Studios, located at 24 Cedar Street in Saranac Lake on November 19 at 7 p.m. “Happening” is a hard-hitting French film that opened in the United States last Spring and earned the Golden Lion award for Best Picture at the prestigious Venice Film Festival last year. It is based on a true story and takes place in the early 1960s when both abortion and contraception were illegal in France and anyone who got an abortion (or helped anyone obtain an abortion) faced imprisonment.
The Adirondack Center for Writing in Saranac Lake is pleased to host another BarkReaders session, this time featuring Adirondack feminist historian, Lorraine Duvall, who will perform a reading of Finding a Woman’s Place on Wednesday, November 9 at 7 p.m. An open mic will follow the reading. Admission to the event is free, with a suggested donation at the door. The reading and open mic will run for a total of 60 minutes, and registration is required.
“Down Memory Lane,” an exhibit of watercolors spanning the more than 55-year career of Jacqueline Altman, will be the featured show at the Adirondack Artists Guild during the month of November. It will open on Friday, November 4 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., and will close on November 29.
In the spring/summer of 2022, with a grant from NYSCA and the support of the creative aging experts at Lifetime Arts Inc, the Adirondack Center for Writing (ACW)created a writing workshop program at Adirondack Correctional Facility, a state prison located in Raybrook, NY. After sixteen workshops, the ACW asked the men in [the] classes to submit their favorite original poems, essays, and stories for a class anthology. I’m Telling You Now, Wherever You Are, is a testament to the fact that a person’s story does not end when they become incarcerated, nor does that person’s past cease to speak.
The anthology’s publication was celebrated on Tuesday, October 11 with a private reading at the prison.
The Lake Flower boat launch waterfront is abloom with pollinator-friendly plants. A successful public-private partnership between New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and AdkAction transformed the waterfront from a suburban lawn into a necklace of various native shrubs, trees, and many pollinator plants.
Historically, the boat launch site featured a manicured grass lawn stretching from the parking lot down to the water’s edge. This lawn allowed constant erosion which washed sediment into the lake. Nitrogen-rich grass clippings also blew into the lake along with other sources of pollution from adjacent lawns and parking areas.
SARANAC LAKE — A region-wide collaboration is providing resources and consultation services to health care providers to increase delivery of comprehensive, evidence-based treatment for nicotine addiction.
North Country Nicotine Consultants (NCNC) is a service administered by The Heart Network and Glens Falls Hospital with support from the state’s Health Systems for a Tobacco Free New York program. NCNC works in partnership with health care systems to develop and support the consistent and effective identification and treatment of tobacco users. Special consideration is given, but not limited to, those that serve disparate populations with low-income, low-educational attainment and/or behavioral health care needs.
On September 19, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that Homeward Bound Adirondacks (HBA) will be receiving $750,000 to support suicide prevention services for local Veterans and their families. The funding is being provided through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program authorized through the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act.
In announcing the award, the Veterans Administration said that it “is continuing its mission of preventing Veteran suicides by partnering with community organizations across the country.” Homeward Bound Adirondacks was one of 80 awardees nationwide. Mark Moeller, Chair of the HBA Board of Directors, expressed his appreciation to the VA on behalf of all North Country Veterans.
