Seagle Music Colony changes name to Seagle Festival

Seagle Music Colony logoUpdate from Tony Kostecki, General Director:

From our founding in 1915 Seagle has been a place for singers to study and learn. In the early years the use of colony in our name was very appropriate as the beautiful Adirondack campus in Schroon Lake was a place to retreat for study.

Over the years, however, we have added many facets to our mission and operations which work in opposition to the idea of Seagle as a retreat.

Most obvious is that we now produce high-quality performances for the public in addition to our work training top-tier emerging vocalists. Furthermore, we have become an incubator for new works of music theater in our summer and fall seasons. These initiatives are all pursued with an eye to the public and the greater opera field.

Fulton Fryar’s Closet At Seagle Music Colony

Fulton's room exteriorBack in 1957 John Seagle invited a young singer to his training program, the Seagle Music Colony. The young singer’s name was Fulton Fryar and this is significant because Fulton was the first African-American to come to the Colony. This was several years before the Civil Rights Movement would win its hard-earned victories in Congress and at this time much of America was still segregated, but John thought him talented and wanted him to come study at Seagle Music Colony.

John’s solution to accommodate Fulton for his stay in Schroon Lake was to have a small bedroom built on the side of the laundry building. Fulton sang in all the shows that summer, sang in the vesper and town concerts, and other than sleeping separately, lived a regular colony life. » Continue Reading.

Unique Adirondack Theatre Opportunities

ADKCenterArts_ShakespeareThe mountains, nature and waterways are just part of what makes our time in the Adirondacks so unique. The other part is the artists, musicians and performers that make the Adirondacks their home while sharing their creativity with the rest of us. Though the numerous Adirondack professional and regional theaters are offering a variety of entertainment, it’s the unique opportunities that these theaters have on the docket that I’d like to highlight.

Pendragon Theatre and the Lake Placid Sinfonietta are presenting “A Soldier’s Tale” on August 3 at 2 pm on the Pendragon stage and a 7 pm showing at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. In additional to their amazing main stage offerings and concerts, this special event brings two professional entities together for a rare production. » Continue Reading.
