Big Snow, Highs Near 0: Adirondack Conditions This Weekend (Updated Jan 18)

BE PREPARED! Start slow, gain experience. Always carry proper safety equipment – including plenty of food, water, flashlights, space blanket, emergency whistle, first aid kit, fire making tools, extra clothing layers and socks, and a map and compass – inform someone of your itinerary, and be prepared to spend an unplanned night in the woods in freezing temperatures. Just before entering the backcountry or launching a boat check the National Weather Service watches, warnings, and advisories here. Follow Adirondack weather forecasts at Burlington and Albany and consult the High Elevation, Recreation, or Lake Champlain forecasts.

Elite Athletes Competing at Lake Placid Freestyle Cup

Gore Mountain Improvements Underway

snow guns, two-story Base Lodge addition and new snowmakerGore Mountain has multiple construction projects underway, including an overhaul to its snowmaking system and an expansion and renovation to the Base Lodge’s Tannery Pub & Restaurant.

A new pump house is being constructed and new pipe installed for Gore to add 2,000 more gallons of water per minute to its pumping capacity for snowmaking. Gore managers expects this “necessary increase” to allow the mountain to open more trails earlier in the season and expand terrain faster.  312 new snow guns are being installed which can be controlled remotely and can respond to real-time weather changes. » Continue Reading.

Recent Forest Ranger Search, Rescues: Injured Snowboarder, Lost Hikers

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers respond to search and rescue incidents in the Adirondacks. Working with other state agencies, local emergency response organizations and volunteer search and rescue groups, Forest Rangers locate and extract lost, injured or distressed people from the Adirondack backcountry.

Comments Sought On Whiteface Management Plan

whiteface mtnThe Adirondack Park Agency (APA) has announced they are now accepting public comment for a proposed amendment to the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center Unit Management Plan.

Highlights of proposed changes include new intermediate downhill ski trails, widening of some existing trails, an extension and replacement of the existing Bear Lift and a replacement and realignment of the existing Freeway Lift. The plan also addresses parking needs, improvements for vehicular and pedestrian access to base areas and mountain biking trails. » Continue Reading.

APA’s Gore Mtn Proposal Expands Downhill Skiing

The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) has announced they are accepting public comments for a proposed amendment to the Gore Mountain Ski Center Unit Management Plan.

Proposed changes include new downhill ski trails, widening of some existing trails, a new triple or quad lift from Northwood Lodge to Lower Sunway, an expansion of the NYSEF building, snowmaking improvements and a request for State Land reclassification. ORDA-Whiteface Opens Trail On Lookout Mountain

Whiteface Wilmington TrailWhiteface Mountain, in Wilmington opened its third peak for skiing and riding. The Wilmington trail, off Lookout Mountain is now open. The Wilmington trail, the northeast’s longest intermediate run, is 2.5-miles long, overlooking Wilmington’s Wild Forest.
