“Hornbeck Boats: the Lightest Boats in the Deep Woods” opened February 19, 2022 at The TAUNY Center in downtown Canton, NY, and will remain on display through May 8, 2022. The exhibit traces the history and impact of the company Hornbeck Boats in Olmstedville, NY, through a selection of boats made by the company, documentary photographs, and video. Curators are folklorist and TAUNY Executive Director Jill Breit, historian and boat curator Hallie E. Bond, and photographer Nancie Battaglia. The video in the exhibit was produced by Gus Geraci, TAUNY’s Director of Digital Content.

TAUNY Garden Tour at Jane Desotelle’s ‘Plattsburgh Botanical Sanctuary’
Join TAUNY in Plattsburgh for the next Grow and Tell Project garden tour of the season. The Grow and Tell Project is a 2021 partnership between TAUNY and littleGrasse Community Farm (Canton, NY), highlighting the local food and food traditions that help sustain us, through a series of garden tours, kitchen demonstrations, video and digital features, and more.
The second in the summer series, this garden tour brings us to Jane Desotelle’s “Plattsburgh Botanical Sanctuary” (Plattsburgh, NY), where Jane will show visitors the garden and share stories of how the things she grows and forages both connect her to her heritage and offer tasty flavors and medicinal properties for living a healthful and delicious life.
A Story of an Aluminum Basket

A few weeks ago, I found an aluminum basket at a shop in Massena. In style, it mimics baskets that are traditionally made from black ash. Available information indicated it was made by someone who worked at Alcoa some years ago.

TAUNY Dairy Farm Workers Project Now Online at Library of Congress
In 2012, TAUNY folklorist Hannah Harvester received an Archie Green Fellowship from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to document the occupational folklife of dairy farmers and farm workers in the North Country. We’re thrilled to announce that TAUNY’s “Dairy Farm Workers in New York’s North Country” Occupational Folklife Project is now online! TAUNY hosts annual open house
This Thursday, Sept. 17, TAUNY, a non profit based in Canton dedicated to folk art/traditions in the Adirondack North Country region, is holding its annual Welcome to the North Country Open House, in a slightly revised way this year.
Join them for an assembly of virtual and in-person features to welcome newcomers, help make and celebrate new neighbors, and invite long-time residents to get to know the North Country in new ways.

New Project by the Fiberistas on display at TAUNY
See the latest fiber arts project by the Fiberistas, an innovative group of North Country quilters whose projects challenge them to experiment with new techniques and explore the potential of quilts as art.
This quilt, made up of unique panels by each quilter, is a landscape challenge, connecting foreground, center field, and background of each slice with a shared horizon line across the project.
In addition to having the collaborative quilt on display at The TAUNY Center through Oct. 24, TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York) is sharing a series of videos of the Fiberistas talking about their work on this new project over the time the quilt is on display. Baking and Tasting Events At TAUNY Kitchen
Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) has invited the public to two special kitchen events.The first is a special bread-baking demonstration and tasting with skilled cook and retired NCPR Station Manager, Ellen Rocco.
Ellen will be in The TAUNY Center kitchen on Saturday, December 14th from 1 to 3 pm to bake and to serve two types of bread from Jewish tradition: braided challah, a bread made with eggs, eaten on the sabbath and at holiday gatherings, and a type of chocolate babka, a rich, bready coffee cake from Eastern Europe. » Continue Reading.
TAUNY’s Holiday Open House Dec 7th
TAUNY’s Annual Holiday Open House has been set for Saturday, December 7th from 10 am to 2 pm. The public is invited to enjoy the Sugar & Spice Gingerbread Contest and Display, seasonal treats, live music, kids’ activities, and fun for the whole family. This event is free and open to the public.
Northern and Southern old-time music will be performed by Possumbilities, Nicholfalls, and The Daveys. Kitchen demonstrations will include dumpling-making with Margaret Chang of Sweet Margaret Cafe and more. TAUNY Hosting Sweater Knitting Competition
TAUNY in Downtown Canton has announced the 2019 TAUNY Knits Sweater Competition.
TAUNY will accept entries knitted in the last 5 years through Wednesday, February 6th at the TAUNY Center. Entries will be accepted in 2 categories: sweaters for adults and sweaters for children. Judging will take place February 7.

TAUNY Plans for St Law County Studio Tour
TAUNY is set to host a variety of programs during the St. Lawrence County Arts Artists’ Studio Tour November 1st to 3rd. The community is invited to stop by The TAUNY Center and to meet local artists and see art-making in action.
These programs will begin on Thursday, November 1st with a 3-day barn quilt making workshop led by Ruth McWilliams. On Saturday, November 3rd, the next Folkstore Artist Spotlight exhibit featuring the work of Susan Robinson will open with a Meet the Artist Opening Reception from 1 to 3 pm. TAUNY Marking 25 Yrs of Heritage Awards at Folklife Festival
TAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, is set to host their TAUNY Folklife Fair: Celebrating 25 Years of North Country Heritage Awards on Sunday, October 28 from noon to 5 pm, with a closing concert by the Fraser Family Friends at 4:15 pm, at The TAUNY Center in Canton.
Over 25 years, TAUNY has recognized 129 individuals, groups, places, and events representing the array of traditions that make the North Country special. A Handmade Instrument Meet and Greet, and Show and Tell has been set for Saturday, April 14th from 11 am to 2 pm at the TAUNY Center in Canton.
