Baking and Tasting Events At TAUNY Kitchen

braided challah made by Ellen RoccoTraditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) has invited the public to two special kitchen events.The first is a special bread-baking demonstration and tasting with skilled cook and retired NCPR Station Manager, Ellen Rocco.

Ellen will be in The TAUNY Center kitchen on Saturday, December 14th from 1 to 3 pm to bake and to serve two types of bread from Jewish tradition: braided challah, a bread made with eggs, eaten on the sabbath and at holiday gatherings, and a type of chocolate babka, a rich, bready coffee cake from Eastern Europe. » Continue Reading.

TAUNY’s Holiday Open House Dec 7th

tauny open houseTAUNY’s Annual Holiday Open House has been set for Saturday, December 7th from 10 am to 2 pm. The public is invited to enjoy the Sugar & Spice Gingerbread Contest and Display, seasonal treats, live music, kids’ activities, and fun for the whole family. This event is free and open to the public.

Northern and Southern old-time music will be performed by Possumbilities, Nicholfalls, and The Daveys. Kitchen demonstrations will include dumpling-making with Margaret Chang of Sweet Margaret Cafe and more. TAUNY Hosting Sweater Knitting Competition

TAUNY will accept entries knitted in the last 5 years through Wednesday, February 6th at the TAUNY Center. Entries will be accepted in 2 categories: sweaters for adults and sweaters for children. Judging will take place February 7.

TAUNY Plans for St Law County Studio Tour

Works by Susan RobinsonTAUNY is set to host a variety of programs during the St. Lawrence County Arts Artists’ Studio Tour November 1st to 3rd. The community is invited to stop by The TAUNY Center and to meet local artists and see art-making in action.

These programs will begin on Thursday, November 1st with a 3-day barn quilt making workshop led by Ruth McWilliams. On Saturday, November 3rd, the next Folkstore Artist Spotlight exhibit featuring the work of Susan Robinson will open with a Meet the Artist Opening Reception from 1 to 3 pm. Visitors can drop by The TAUNY Center throughout the day that Saturday to see Folkstore Artists Mary Harding, Tina Charbonneau, Debra Monteith, and Elaine Boots demonstrating their skills in the TAUNY Gallery. » Continue Reading.

TAUNY Marking 25 Yrs of Heritage Awards at Folklife Festival

Frasiers ConcertTAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, is set to host their TAUNY Folklife Fair: Celebrating 25 Years of North Country Heritage Awards on Sunday, October 28 from noon to 5 pm, with a closing concert by the Fraser Family Friends at 4:15 pm, at The TAUNY Center in Canton.

Over 25 years, TAUNY has recognized 129 individuals, groups, places, and events representing the array of traditions that make the North Country special. The Folklife Fair, held this year in place of TAUNY’s annual Salute event, will feature over thirty past award recipients and friends sharing their traditions with the community through demonstrations of material, visual, food, and musical arts, award-themed refreshments, and further hands-on activities and learning experiences. » Continue Reading.

Jane Desotelle with her handmade, all-natural balsam wreathsThis holiday season, TAUNY will once again offer Adirondack Balsam Wreaths for sale. Each year, TAUNY works with naturalist and North Country Heritage Award recipient Jane Desotelle to offer handmade balsam wreaths for the holidays.

All wreaths are made to order with balsam fir and natural decorations from the woods of the Adirondack foothills. The wreaths are long-lasting, fragrant, and can usually remain on display until Spring.

Wreaths are available in three sizes and with various color options. The prices by size are $28 (small), $32 (medium), and $45 (large), and can be shipped anywhere in the U.S. for additional shipping charges. Half the cost of each wreath is a tax-deductible donation to TAUNY. » Continue Reading.

Mohawk Iron Workers ‘Skydancer’ Film Screening Planned

skydancerTAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, has invited the public to a presentation of Skydancer, a film about the Mohawk iron-workers who regularly commute from Akwesasne to New York City to work on the “high steel,” building the skyscrapers of Manhattan.

This 2011 film by Academy Award-nominated director Katja Esson follows iron-workers Jerry McDonald Thundercloud and Sky Fox as they shuttle between the hard drinking Brooklyn lodging houses they call home during the week and their family lives, a grueling drive six hours north back home to Akwesasne, NY, on the weekends. Through archival documents and interviews, it also explores the broader history of the Mohawk skywalkers, presenting the nuanced and visually stunning stories of these renowned men who, over six generations, have been traveling to New York City to work on some of the biggest construction jobs in the world. » Continue Reading.
