Chilson VFD Dinner-Dance Marking 40 Years

chilson vfdChilson Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 40th Annual Valentine’s Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 10th at 5:30 pm at the Employees Mutual Association (E.M.A.) at 9 Maplewood Lane in Ticonderoga.

Along with dinner, music and dancing, the evening will feature continuous mini-raffles with prizes donated by local businesses. The lecture series will be held on Sunday afternoons at 2 pm in the Mars Education Center. Fire Prevention Week Breakfast In Chilson

Chilson fire dept pancake BreakfastChilson Volunteer Fire Department will mark National Fire Prevention Week this year with a pancake breakfast on Saturday, October 14 from 8 am to 10 am at the department’s Chilson Community House at 60 Putts Pond Road.

Drop in to enjoy Larry Lauman’s famous apple pancakes, with sides of bacon and sausage – and plenty of coffee, of course. Breakfast is free to Chilson and Ticonderoga neighbors and friends (although donations will be gratefully accepted).

The Summit is a free day-long program designed for public and private winter road maintenance professionals in Lake George and across the Adirondack region.

John Hancock’s Table Acquired By Ticonderoga Hancock House

john hancocks tableThe Ticonderoga Historical Society has received the donation of a table that was once in the “banqueting hall” of the original John Hancock mansion in Boston. The table was the gift of Benn and Claire Eilers of Bend, Oregon.  Benn Eilers is a descendant of Hancock’s sister-in-law, Sarah Quincy.

With leaves that extend to 30 feet, the table is constructed of birds-eye walnut, a relatively rare wood. It is believed that George Washington dined at the table while visiting the Hancock House in Boston in 1789, during Hancock’s time as Governor of Massachusetts. » Continue Reading.

Best Fourth in the North: Five Days of Fun in Ticonderoga

According to Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mathew Courtright, Ticonderoga’s annual Best Fourth of the North celebration was originally organized by the Ticonderoga Volunteer Fire Department.  After Courtright polled his own family, he learned the event has been happening for over 65 years, maybe longer.

“Debbie Barber is the chairperson of the event,” says Courtright. “It has always been run by a dedicated group of volunteers. They add various aspects to the event each year. This year we have seven bands and even added a fifth day.” » Continue Reading.

Officials Tout Lake Champlain Bass Fishing Tournaments

champlain bass tournamentThe Town of Ticonderoga, the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) and the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) have announced the results of the 2016 Lake Champlain Bass Fishing Tournament survey, and the 2017 tournament lineup.

In 2016, TACC partnered with ROOST to conduct a survey of bass fishing tournament participants to gather feedback. The survey was distributed to all tournament participants throughout the spring, summer and fall of 2016, and included questions about location and duration of stay, and type and total expenditures while they were in the region, in addition to collecting demographic data. » Continue Reading.

Ticonderoga Hospital Renovations Planned

The renovation, which will replace the existing inpatient hospital with new emergency and outpatient departments, is expected to take two years, said Jane Hooper, the hospital’s director of community relations.

Ticonderoga’s Hancock House Celebrating 90 Years

hot box honeyThe Ticonderoga Historical Society will celebrate the 90th birthday of the Hancock House, its architecturally significant headquarters building, on Saturday July 16th. The gala “Roaring Twenties” evening, will be complete with flapper dresses and hot jazz.

Burlington-based Hot Box Honey headlined the Hancock House’s 2015 USO Show. Led by jazz vocalist Jane Evans and guitarist Gregory Evans, Hot Box Honey is an eight-piece band with horns, multi-vocalists, guitar, double bass, piano and drums. They will showcase an upbeat mix of swing, Latin, and jazz standards from the 1920s era. Also entertaining during the picnic supper portion of the evening will be the Saratoga Springs barbershop quartet The Elderly Brothers. » Continue Reading.

Irish Military Encampment And Concert Saturday

The evening will feature a concert by “Hair of the Dog,” the well-known Celtic band with a large fan base across the United States and Europe. Opening for the band is the popular local trio “Loose Monkeys.”

The afternoon will also include several brief programs highlighting the Irish in the American Civil War and How the Adirondacks worked for Irish Freedom. William L.
