Contemporary Iroquois art program set for Sept. 22 at Reamer Campus Center, Union College

UCALL and the Kelly Adirondack Center present a Contemporary Iroquois Art program with Colette Lemmon scheduled for Thursday, September 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Reamer Campus Center at Union College in Schenectady. Refreshments will be available beginning at 5 p.m.

From the elegant beauty of baskets and antler carving to the thoughtful, occasionally provocative imagery of sculpture and painting, Iroquois art offers a window into the culture itself. Join us as we explore a wide range of contemporary Iroquois art and the inspiration, creative process, and purpose behind these amazing expressions. Rooted in the past but invested in the future, Iroquois art contains references to stories, values, history, cultural identity and the nearly insurmountable challenge of maintaining traditions in the face of change and assimilation.

Great Adirondack Boat Race slated for May 8 in Long Lake

On Sunday, May 8, the men’s rowing teams from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY and Union College in Schenectady, NY will vie for the Great Adirondack Cup at the Long Lake Town Beach located at 1258 Main Street, State Route 30 in Long Lake, NY. This will be the fifth match-up between these two crew teams in Long Lake, having taken off one year in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual Great Adirondack Boat Race is tentatively slated to kick off from the Long Lake Town Beach between 9 and 10 a.m., depending on weather conditions. (The race could start earlier if needed due to weather and wind, and the start time of the race is subject to change without notice.)

The area between Helms Aero Service and the Town Beach restrooms will be reserved for parking for team trailers and shells starting on Saturday, May 7 through Sunday, May 8 . The racing event is free and open to the public. Parking for spectators will be available along State Route 30, Main Street (on the Jennings Park Pond side of the road) with additional spectator parking available at the Long Lake Central School.

Long Lake to Host Union College – SLU Rowing Event

St. Lawrence rowing teamOn Sunday, May 14th, 2017 the men’s rowing teams from St. Lawrence University and Union College will meet for a match at the Long Lake Town Beach, located at 1204 Main Street, NYS Route 30 in Long Lake.

The race is tentatively slated to kick off from the Long Lake Town Beach between 8 am and 9 am, weather dependent. The race could kick off as early as 6 am if needed due to weather and wind. Exhibit: 20th Century Adirondack Park Conservation Movement

Kelly Adirondack CenterGrassroots Activism and the American Wilderness: Pioneers in the 20th Century Adirondack Park Conservation Movement, a new exhibit featuring material from the John S. Apperson and Paul Schaefer collections, will be on display in the Lally Reading Room of Union College’s Schaffer Library through December.

The collections, spanning from 1899 to 1996, provide a window into the history of the American environmental movement and the tensions that erupted over efforts to conserve the Adirondack Forest Preserve and expand the Adirondack Park. The materials also give a broader understanding of the history of national park and wilderness preservation and the critical role activism played in those efforts. » Continue Reading.
