ReLeaf Webinar Series: Climate Change and Community Forest Program

treesJoin NYS ReLeaf’s Hudson Valley committee for a webinar on Climate and Community Forest programs. This lunchtime webinar on on May 6 from noon – 1:15 p.m. will introduce you to programs that can help your community get climate smart and prepare your community forest for the future.

Angelica Patterson (master science educator, Black Rock Forest and PhD candidate Columbia University) will talk about how plants are responding to warming climate and the factors driving climate-induced tree migrations, while Andy Hillman (arborist, urban forestry consultant, NYS Urban Forestry Council) will present a selection of trees from other regions evaluated for the northeast and the importance of considering hardy cultivars for future climates, and Dazzle Ekblad (Office of Climate Change, NYS DEC) will introduce the Climate Smart Communities program and how to get started with climate smart programs in your community.

Common Ground Alliance Invites Public to Attend Virtual Winter Meeting

The Common Ground Alliance (CGA) and the Northern Forest Center invites community members to join their winter meeting on Thursday, March 25 at 12:30 p.m. The free virtual event will update the community on progress since the 2020 CGA Annual Forum and present the Strategy for Attracting New Residents to the Adirondacks.

Advance registration is required for the one-hour event, which will be held on Zoom Webinar.

Art gallery roundup: Upcoming Exhibits & Calls for Art

A year into this pandemic, and many small businesses are struggling with how to safely stay in business. Our area artists and galleries are no exception. Fortunately, we have the largest “canvas” in the world available to us – the internet!

Several of our galleries have opted to hold virtual exhibits in addition to in-gallery shows. NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery (https://northwindfineartsgallery.com) is now sharing a space in the back of the former Sears Store (62 Main St., Saranac Lake) with ADK ArtRise (https://www.adkartrise.com) – a school offering art classes.

Adirondack Land Trust plans events to showcase Northern Forest Atlas

This winter the Adirondack Land Trust is hosting an online discussion and a field trip showcasing the Northern Forest Atlas, a collection of graphic tools for naturalists of all abilities.

At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, Northern Forest Atlas Director Jerry Jenkins will present a virtual introduction to the atlas’s free online resources, including photographs, videos and other digital tools. Jenkins will also give a brief botany lesson from northernforestatlas.org.
