Champlain Area Trails (CATS) will host the 2018 Grand Hike on Saturday, May 12. This year’s 14-mile route will run from the Westport Train Station to the Essex Inn, beginning with a new trail on land CATS just conserved in the Westport area.

Champlain Area Trails (CATS) has recently acquired Viall’s Crossing, a historic 132.5-acre farm in Westport that had been placed on the market last August.
In an announcement sent to the press, CATS Executive Director Chris Maron said: “Viall’s Crossing is the only place where a hiking/skiing trail going directly north from the Westport train station to Essex could legally cross the Canadian Pacific railroad tracks. CATS has envisioned doing this for years.”

Westport’s Visitors Center, located on the town’s Main Street, continues to reshape and evolve as a year-round community center with space for exercise classes, parties and meetings. In addition to being a place to connect with local history, the Westport Heritage House is sharing art, music, and a local market.
According to Westport Heritage House marketing consultant Nicolas Faragan, the Westport Heritage House hosts its Indoor Country Market the first Saturday of each month. With a variety of vendors, the 10 am to 1 pm local market features farm fresh veggies, meat, artisan bread as well as crafts and handmade gifts. A new trail is being added to the Champlain Area Trails (CATS) network, thanks to the efforts of 13 volunteers who recently visited the area. The Volunteer Vacationers came from Colorado, Arizona, Virginia, Michigan, New Jersey and New York in an American Hiking Society program that links people who want to spend their vacation building and maintaining trails for organizations like CATS. This is the fourth year CATS has hosted Volunteer Vacationers.
The group stayed at Camp Dudley while working under the supervision of CATS Trail Steward Bill Amadon to build a new trail. They spent a free day during the week exploring the Lake Champlain area from Ticonderoga to Rouse’s Point, including travels in Vermont to Middlebury and Burlington. » Continue Reading.
The region’s small farms will be celebrated with an all-day Adirondack Harvest Festival at the Essex County Fairgrounds from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday, September 16th, including Champlain Area Trails’ Farm-To-Fest Hike.
The Adirondack Harvest Festival will display the valley’s harvest with over 30 regional agricultural vendors, including cheese-makers, meat and sausage producers, vegetable growers, brewers and vintners. Exhibits and films and farm presentations will be shown in Floral Hall throughout the day. There will be demonstrations including cider pressing, bee keeping, growing gourmet mushrooms, harvesting and storing seeds, flax processing, baking with ancient grains and soap making. An Essex County Arts and Crafts Festival will be held Wednesday and Thursday, August 30-31, at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport.

The Depot Theatre offers a professional apprenticeship for young artists (ages 11-15) that covers a broad spectrum of theatrical skills and experiences. These include scene composition, set and costume design, voice and movement training, improvisation, and acting skills. This summer’s apprenticeship culminates with the Depot Apprentice Showcase, two public performances where the apprentices will demonstrate what they have learned to a live audience.
Featuring Shakespeare’s rude mechanicals from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and an array of contemporary movements and monologues the Depot Apprentice Showcase performances will take place on Friday, August 4th at 5 pm on the Depot Theatre main stage and Saturday, August 5th at 6 pm outdoors in Ballard Park.
