Westport Heritage House Indoor Market, Music Events

Westport’s Visitors Center, located on the town’s Main Street, continues to reshape and evolve as a year-round community center with space for exercise classes, parties and meetings. In addition to being a place to connect with local history, the Westport Heritage House is sharing art, music, and a local market.

According to Westport Heritage House marketing consultant Nicolas Faragan, the Westport Heritage House hosts its Indoor Country Market the first Saturday of each month. With a variety of vendors, the 10 am to 1 pm local market features farm fresh veggies, meat, artisan bread as well as crafts and handmade gifts. Volunteer Vacationers Build New Trail in Wesport

Thirteen Volunteer Vacationers from around the country worked with CATS, guided by CATS Trail Steward Bill Amadon (second from left) and Abby-the-Golden-RetrieverA new trail is being added to the Champlain Area Trails (CATS) network, thanks to the efforts of 13 volunteers who recently visited the area. The Volunteer Vacationers came from Colorado, Arizona, Virginia, Michigan, New Jersey and New York in an American Hiking Society program that links people who want to spend their vacation building and maintaining trails for organizations like CATS. This is the fourth year CATS has hosted Volunteer Vacationers.

The group stayed at Camp Dudley while working under the supervision of CATS Trail Steward Bill Amadon to build a new trail. They spent a free day during the week exploring the Lake Champlain area from Ticonderoga to Rouse’s Point, including travels in Vermont to Middlebury and Burlington. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Harvest Festival, Farm-to-Fest Hike Saturday

The region’s small farms will be celebrated with an all-day Adirondack Harvest Festival at the Essex County Fairgrounds from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday, September 16th, including Champlain Area Trails’ Farm-To-Fest Hike.

The Adirondack Harvest Festival will display the valley’s harvest with over 30 regional agricultural vendors, including cheese-makers, meat and sausage producers, vegetable growers, brewers and vintners. Exhibits and films and farm presentations will be shown in Floral Hall throughout the day. There will be demonstrations including cider pressing, bee keeping, growing gourmet mushrooms, harvesting and storing seeds, flax processing, baking with ancient grains and soap making. Depot Theatre’s Young Actors Showcase August 4 & 5

The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe 2015The Depot Theatre offers a professional apprenticeship for young artists (ages 11-15) that covers a broad spectrum of theatrical skills and experiences. These include scene composition, set and costume design, voice and movement training, improvisation, and acting skills.  This summer’s apprenticeship culminates with the Depot Apprentice Showcase, two public performances where the apprentices will demonstrate what they have learned to a live audience.

Featuring Shakespeare’s rude mechanicals from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and an array of contemporary movements and monologues the Depot Apprentice Showcase performances will take place on Friday, August 4th at 5 pm on the Depot Theatre main stage and Saturday, August 5th at 6 pm outdoors in Ballard Park. Depot Theatre Presenting New Adirondack Arts Leadership Award

On Thursday, August 3, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the home of a Depot Theatre board member in Westport, supporters, staff, and casts of the Theatre will gather for hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and drinks provided by My Cup of Tea Catering, music from the show The Taffetas, and to inaugurate the presentation of two new awards. The public is invited to attend.

Soundwaves Concert Series Scheduled in Westport

Soundwaves has announced a 2017 summer concert series at Ballard Park in Westport, to be held on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm from July 6th to July 27th, 2017.

Westport’s Depot Theatre Announces 39th Season

The Depot Theatre has announced the details for its 39th Season. The main stage lineup will feature three productions: a new comedy with penguins; the true story of the infamous “singer” Florence Foster Jenkins; and a musical tour of 1950’s with an aspiring girl group.

Opening the season on July 7th in its East Coast Premiere, A Brief History of Penguins & Promiscuity is a new comedy in which Victorian literature, Penguin musk, shotguns, fantasy men, and French waiters all collide in this racy look at paternity. Westport’s Stone Schoolhouse Celebrates 200 Years

unnamed-1The little stone school house on Dudley Road is more than just the oldest schoolhouse in Essex County, it was the first schoolhouse in Westport. Built in 1816 from local limestone, the small stone school first opened to serve the first settlers of Westport, the Barber and Frisbie families. On October 10, the town of Westport will be celebrating the bicentennial of this small school.

According to nearby Camp Dudley, the Stone School House served local children for 100 years, closing its doors in 1916. During its tenure the school could serve up to 24 children and provide students with a library of 84 books. Champlain Area Harvest Fest, Hamlet Hikes Sept 16-17

CATS hikeThe Adirondack Harvest Festival will be held at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport on Friday and Saturday, September 16th and 17th. The event, which celebrates local farms and farmers with food, drink, music, and hikes, is supported by supported by the Hub on the Hill, Adirondack Farmers Coalition, Champlain Area Trails Society, Cornell University Cooperative Extension, The Adirondack Cuisine Trail, and adirondacks, usa.

The fairgrounds will feature a farmers’ market, over forty vendors, farming demonstrations (learn how to make sausage, cheese, and more), Ben Stechschulte’s film “Small Farm Rising,” and “Eat, Meet, & Be Merry,” a get-together hosted by Essex Farm’s Mark Kimball and the Adirondack Farmers Coalition, to sample local foods and exchange stories about our area’s new farming culture.

Depot Theatre Launches Campaign For New Seating

Depot TheatreThe Depot Theatre has launched a capital campaign to upgrade audience seating in its historic 1876 train station theatre.

The new seats, upholstered with 100% recycled fabric, will replace the existing 60+ year-old seats which are difficult to maintain and for which replacement parts are obsolete. Dedicated wheelchair accessible seats with companion seating are part of the upgrade, as well as LED aisle lighting. Additionally, new commercial grade tile carpeting will be installed throughout the seating area.
