A Full Moon Hike With John Brown Lives

The farm has a unique connection to John Brown. Asa Viall, the son of the farm’s first owner, was a friend of the abolitionist, who led an unsuccessful raid on a Virginia armory in 1859. When Brown was executed for leading a rebellion to end slavery, Asa Viall provided and drove the wagon that took Brown’s body to its final resting place at his farm in North Elba, near Lake Placid. » Continue Reading.

NYSCA Increases Support of Depot Theatre

Depot Theatre in Amtrak train stationThe New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) has increased its commitment to the Depot Theatre with a grant of $17,000 per year for each of the next three years. The grant is the largest multi-year general-operating support NYSCA award to the Depot since 2008.
NYSCA grants support the transformative impact of the performing, literary, visual and media arts in New York State.  The Depot Theatre is one of 462 arts organizations across New York State receiving a total of $8,383,993 million in grants through NYSCA’s Round II FY2020 funding.

DEC to Remove Sediments at Westport Boat Launch

DEC logoThe New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced that the agency will remove sediments accumulated in front of the ramp of the Westport Boat Launch on Lake Champlain in late October.

Depot Theatre Works To Protect Its Historic Home

Depot Theatre in WestportThe Depot Theatre in Westport has been awarded a Preserve New York grant of $4,712 to complete a condition analysis of the 1876 train station in which the theatre resides.

The Depot Theatre is a nonprofit, professional theatre located in a historic, functioning 1876 train station owned by the Town of Westport, and it is the only theatre in New York’s Adirondack Park that operates under an agreement with Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States. The theatre is also the caretaker of the station on behalf of Amtrak. » Continue Reading.

APA Board Meeting: Primitive Campsites, Logging, Subdivision

The World Goes ‘Round At Depot Theatre: A Fan’s Notes

world goes roundHere’s one Depot Theatre devotee and Kander and Ebb admirer’s take on The World Goes ‘Round — a cornucopia of songs by the creative team that gave us the mega-hit Broadway classics Cabaret and Chicago.

One of my earliest experiences with the music of Kander and Ebb involved the first time I auditioned for a production by my high school Drama Club, way back in tenth grade. My family and I had seen the movie version of Cabaret starring Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles and directed by the one-and-only Bob Fosse, and my parents subsequently bought the eight-track tape of the film’s score (if you were born any time after 1980, go ask Grandma what an eight-track was!). It was played a lot in our house, so I was quite familiar with the songs in the movie and my favorite was “Maybe This Time” — a rueful, “am-down-and-out-but-will-rise-again” anthem that, as belted out by Ms. Minnelli, is one of the musical high points in a movie packed with them. » Continue Reading.

Depot Theatre’s 2019 Youth Program Details

Wonka performanceThe Depot Theatre has announced the details of its 2019 Boquet River Theatre Festival (BRTF) Youth Theatre Program. The 2019 Junior program production (ages 8-12), will be The Lion King Jr. Rehearsals begin July 15, with performances on August 2, 3 and 4.

2019 CATS Grand Hike Route Announced

Champlain Area Trails (CATS) has announced the route for the 2019 Grand Hike on May 11 which includes revisions to last years route. For the last few years, the final stretch of the 14-mile Grand Hike from Westport to Essex included a three-mile walk along Route 22.

This year, though, the route leaves the highway for all but 500 feet and instead crosses scenic pastures and forests before connecting with Blockhouse Road into Essex. » Continue Reading.

CATS Celebrating New Viall’s Crossing Trails Dec 29th

Volunteers on Vialls Crossing trailsChamplain Area Trails (CATS) has announced a grand opening hike, snowshoe, or ski, set for Saturday, December 29, beginning at 10 am, to celebrate the addition of two new “loop trails” to the Viall’s Crossing Trail.

Since opening last spring, the Viall’s Crossing Trail, has been an increasingly popular addition to the Champlain Area Trails (CATS) network. People use it to hike between Westport and Essex, or to make a five-mile loop that starts and ends in Westport, or as an out-and-back. » Continue Reading.
