Grange Benefit For Reber Rock Farm Celebrates Bob Dylan

The-GrangeOn Saturday, April 16, the Whallonsburg Grange Hall will host a dinner and concert, with all proceeds going towards the reconstruction of the barn at Reber Rock Farm. The farm, located in the Reber Valley just outside of Essex, lost its new barn in a fire on February 27. Along with the building, Reber Rock lost calves, laying hens, tools, equipment, hay, and grain.

The benefit will begin with a farm-fresh dinner, serving from 5-6:30 pm, $10 for adults and $5 for those under 12. A full evening of music celebrating the 75th birthday of Bob Dylan follows at 7 pm, with The Wannabes, Alice’s Fault, and Ploughman’s Lunch. Whallonsburg Grange: Six Objects Winter Lyceum Series

grange lyceum series flyerThe Whallonsburg Grange has announced its winter Lyceum series, “More History of Everything in Six Objects.” The presenters will choose and discuss six objects that demonstrate the history, evolution, and significance of the common things around us. The lectures will occur on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm throughout the months of February and March.

The series opens on February 9, 2016 with architects Beverly Eichenlaub and Bryan Burke presenting “Six Buildings.” Admission for each lecture is $5, and free for students. » Continue Reading.

Seed Saving Roundtable At Whallonsburg Grange

The-GrangeThe Whallonsburg Grange will host a free Seed Saving Roundtable this Saturday, August 8, from 9:30 to 11 am.

Local beekeeper and gardener Tim McGarry will lead a roundtable for both experienced and beginning seed savers. Participants can learn how to save seeds from their favorite heirloom tomato and pepper plants this month, and how to prepare for more seed saving next season. ‘Here One Day’ Movie Screening at LPCA and The Grange

Though most of us don’t talk about experiences regarding suicide, Producer and Film Director Kathy Leichter is bringing her film, Here One Day to Lake Placid and Whallonsburg. She hopes that her own family’s personal tragedy about her bipolar mother’s suicide will help end the stigma of mental illness and suicide.

The film Here One Day is told through the intimate, emotional audiotapes left by a bipolar Nina Leichter (the filmmaker’s mother) after her suicide. This raw film unearths the effects of mental illness, family relationships and the indelible mark that suicide leaves on those left behind.

According to Director/Producer Kathy Leichter the Here One Day screenings are combined with community education nights to create a safe space to share stories about mental illness. She wants to help link the audience to local support. » Continue Reading.

Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert On Saturday

SK_website2Sharon Katz and The Peace Train, a four-piece band from South Africa, will perform at The Grange in Whallonsburg on Saturday, May 17 with their Afro-pop sound in a special tribute to the late South African leader Nelson Mandela who died in December.

Growing up under apartheid, Sharon Katz formed a multicultural, multilingual group in 1993. After Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and as the apartheid regime disintegrated, Katz set off by rail across the country with 150 performers, including the legendary group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.  Called “The Peace Train,” they gave concerts at every stop, promoting an end to violence and a peaceful transition to democracy.  In 1994, she was commissioned by the Independent Electoral Commission to write songs in many of South Africa’s languages to support the first free election in the new nation. » Continue Reading.

A New Crop of Farmers Take Root in Champlain Valley

asa_courtney_cattle-600x468When Asa Thomas-Train met his future wife, Courtney Grimes-Sutton, she was skinning a pig. Rather than wonder why an attractive young woman was doing a job usually reserved for big, brawny guys, Asa reacted with admiration. “She’s an incredibly capable, charismatic, and strong woman,” he said recently.

That summer of 2010, they were working at Essex Farm, a mecca for edgy young farmers honing their agricultural skills. Founded a decade ago by Mark and Kristin Kimball, the farm has had a prodigious influence, spawning new farmers and a warm farming community. Adirondack Women’s History Events Planned

image001(8)Celebrate Women’s History Month on March 21 and 22 with a program of stories and music by acclaimed Adirondack singer-songwriter Peggy Lynn and author/performer Sandra Weber.

On Friday, March 21 at 7:00 pm Peggy and Sandra perform at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall. On Saturday, March 22 at 6:30 pm at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts there is a reception to benefit the Adirondack History Center Museum followed by a performance at 7:30 pm. The Wild Spirits: Songs and Stories of Remarkable Adirondack Women program highlights the contributions and journeys of famous (and not so famous) women of the Adirondacks. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Wildlife Programs Planned in Whallonsburgh

Bobcat025_Portrait of Snowy FaceA series of natural history programs about Adirondack wildlife will be held at the Whallonsburg Grange in Essex, NY.  The series begins with naturalist and photographer Susan Morse speaking on Friday, February 21.   Morse’s lecture, entitled “Animals of the North:  What Will Climate Change Mean for Them” will be held at 7:00 p.m.  Suggested donation is $8.

Morse, Founder and Director of Keeping Track, Inc., describes says the program is not about climate change itself, or even how it will affect us; rather, it’s designed to educate audiences about ways in which northern wildlife species are already being affected, with more serious challenges ahead. » Continue Reading.

Whallonsburg Grange Lyceum Lectures Feature History

The-GrangeAn Adirondack history lecture series continues at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall, 1610 NYS Route 22 in the Champlain Valley. Presentations on the early settlement, the philosophy and invention of the wilderness ideal, the history of the forest preserve and boats and boating are included in the schedule.

Adirondack Family Activities: A Free Showing of Lincoln

lincoln_legal 2The Champlain Valley Film Society is going to spend its 10th anniversary this Saturday, April 27 with an Oscar-nominated film. After screening almost 170 films since its inception in 2003, The Film Society is thanking audience members with a free showing of Daniel Day-Lewis’s Oscar winning performance in Lincoln.

Founded by Larry Barns, Thurston Clarke, Bill James and David Reuther, the Champlain Valley Film Society has grown from an infrequent outdoor movie experience to a nonprofit, monthly art house cinema from fall to spring.

The four men found that the closest theatre experience was the Plattsburgh area, which wasn’t always showing films they wished to see. Burlington was too far so they joined forces to bring current, classic, foreign and independent films to the Champlain Valley. » Continue Reading.
