ATVs On The Forest Preserve: A Constitutional Amendment?

A utility vehicle traverses a Whiteface road in August In mid-June, Whiteface Mountain advertised a summer activity — rides aboard big all-terrain vehicles on the ski slopes of the High Peaks landmark. Called the “4×4 Alpine Expedition,” marketing videos showed children and adults enjoying the guided tours.

Callers to the resort’s customer service line were told they could book 60-minute or 90-minute excursions through the fall.

But by July, the rides were abruptly canceled. That came after environmental watchdogs raised concerns to state officials, and after the Adirondack Explorer inquired about the propriety of the rides. » Continue Reading.

This Summer At Lake Placid’s Olympic Venues

90 and 120 Meter JumpsThree Olympic venues open this weekend as the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) ramps up a schedule of family fun and activities.

The Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, in Wilmington, NY, opens on Friday, May 18. The Highway, stretching eight miles from Wilmington to the summit, allows visitors to drive to the top of New York State’s fifth-highest peak. Once at the summit, guests can enjoy views of the Adirondack High Peaks and visit a castle made of native stone. The Highway is open weekends only through May 28, then daily, from June 1 through October 8. » Continue Reading.

Comments Sought On Whiteface Management Plan

whiteface mtnThe Adirondack Park Agency (APA) has announced they are now accepting public comment for a proposed amendment to the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center Unit Management Plan.

Highlights of proposed changes include new intermediate downhill ski trails, widening of some existing trails, an extension and replacement of the existing Bear Lift and a replacement and realignment of the existing Freeway Lift. The plan also addresses parking needs, improvements for vehicular and pedestrian access to base areas and mountain biking trails. » Continue Reading.

Missing Whiteface Skier Constantinos 'Danny' FilippidisUpdate: Mike Lynch at Adirondack Explorer attended a State Police press conference Wednesday afternoon and filed the story located here.

After five and a half days searching in freezing temperatures, deep snow and freezing rain, missing Whiteface skier Constantinos “Danny” Filippidis of Toronto has been located – alive and well in California.

Mike Lynch at Adirondack Explorer interviewed Frank Ramagnano, President of the Toronto Professional Firefighters Association, the group Filippidis was skiing with when he was reported missing.

Ramagnano said he believes Filippidis spoke with his wife Tuesday prompting a response by emergency medical services, who found him still in his ski clothes, possibly in a confused state. » Continue Reading.

Search Continues For Missing Whiteface Skier

Missing Whiteface Skier Constantinos 'Danny' FilippidisThe multi-agency search for a missing skier, Constantinos “Danny” Filippidis, continued through the weekend and continues today, Monday, February 12, 2018. Filippidis, age 49, of Toronto, Canada, was reported missing at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. He was last seen at the Whiteface Mountain Ski resort’s mid-station between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Since that time, teams led by the Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers in coordination with the New York State Police and staff from Whiteface Mountain have been searching for Filippidis.

The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) has invited all Whiteface region municipal leaders, businesses, organizations and individuals to attend a brief regional destination marketing review, followed by a reception at Pourman’s Tap House, on Thursday, January 25 from 5:30 to 7 pm.

The agenda will include a brief presentation by ROOST staff and time for Q&A, followed by a networking opportunity with light refreshments and a cash bar.
