APA to vote on Whiteface amendment

The Adirondack Park Agency is meeting in person this week for the first time since last summer. The two-day meeting will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the APA’s Ray Brook headquarters. It will pick back up at 9 a.m. on Friday. The meeting will be broadcast live online, but public comment will have to be made in person. Face masks are not required but encouraged, the agency wrote.

There are several projects the board is expected to vote on including an amendment to the Whiteface Ski Center Unit Management Plan. More background on that here. Staff are recommending approval for the amendment’s conformance with the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan.

Guests, who dress as Mr. or Mrs. Claus, participate in a group photo, and arrive by 10 am, receive a free lift ticket to ski or ride the Olympic mountain.

World Cup Luge Comes to Lake Placid

2015 luge world cupNew York Olympic Regional Development Authority and USA Luge are set welcome Thanksgiving holiday visitors at Mount Van Hoevenberg this weekend as World Cup luge racing makes its annual visit to Lake Placid.

Lake Placid Celebrating 1980 Olympics 40th Anniversary

The U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey Team’s improbable win over the Russians, known as the “Miracle on Ice,” along with speed skater Eric Heiden’s five gold medals, helped make the 1980 Lake Placid Games one with an enduring legacy.

Lake Placid Hikers Shuttle Stops Map Courtesy Adirondack AtlasThe free Whiteface-Lake Placid hiker shuttle has two departing locations in Lake Placid, the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort (Shuttle stop 1) and Mirror Lake Park, across from the High Peaks Resort (Shuttle stop 2).

The shuttle runs every Friday through Sunday from September 13 – October 6, and for the four-day Columbus Day Weekend. Shuttles are scheduled approximately every 60 minutes. The last shuttle leaves Lake Placid from Mirror Lake Park at 2:47 pm. » Continue Reading.

ATVs On The Forest Preserve: A Constitutional Amendment?

A utility vehicle traverses a Whiteface road in August In mid-June, Whiteface Mountain advertised a summer activity — rides aboard big all-terrain vehicles on the ski slopes of the High Peaks landmark. Called the “4×4 Alpine Expedition,” marketing videos showed children and adults enjoying the guided tours.

Callers to the resort’s customer service line were told they could book 60-minute or 90-minute excursions through the fall.

But by July, the rides were abruptly canceled. That came after environmental watchdogs raised concerns to state officials, and after the Adirondack Explorer inquired about the propriety of the rides. » Continue Reading.
