Call to Artists: NorthWind Gallery Virtual Juried Show

NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery will be hosting an upcoming juried art show, under the theme: “The Healing Wilderness.” Organizers are inviting artists of any type of media to submit work inspired by the power of the wild places to heal after tumultuous times.

The gallery is located in the heart of Saranac Lake, a village founded on its healing powers since the 20th century when it was discovered that fresh air could help ease tuberculosis.

Selected works will be displayed in a digital format at the NorthWind Fine Arts Gallery during Saranac Lake’s Winter Carnival, as well as online and via social media. Award-winning pieces will be showcased on North Country Public Radio’s virtual art gallery, the UpNorth Gallery.

Raquette Lake Winter Carnival This Presidents’ Weekend

Since 1956 Raquette Lake has been celebrating winter with its hometown charm. High on community involvement, the 64th Raquette Lake Winter Carnival is the place to be for two days filled with winter fun and strangers and neighbors all welcomed into the fold.

Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Parade Saturday

2017 Winter Carnival Parade MarchersThe Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Gala Parade is set for Saturday, February 10 at 1 pm. The parade will take place at Broadway and Main Street from Ampersand Avenue to Lapan Highway and the public is invited to assemble along the route. The procession is a crowd favorite and tradition of the Winter Carnival, featuring many creative floats, quirky performers, community members and more.

Parade performers will be judged in several classes covering businesses, civic or volunteer groups, youth groups, school groups, independent groups and animal units. Trophies will be awarded to the top two entries in each group that most conform to the “Adirondack Festival” theme, as well as the Louis Fobare Trophy for Best of Show. » Continue Reading.

Raquette Lake Winter Carnival February 17-19

It’s still playtime and for those visitors and Adirondackers on the Winter Carnival tour, Raquette Lake is the next stop for some wintertime fun, whether for a brief layover or a long stay.

According to the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department’s Cindy Black, the Raquette Lake Winter Carnival has grown over the years with locals and visitors joining in the fun. Snowmobile season is still in full swing so people make Raquette Lake a destination for the February 17-19 weekend.

“Most of the events are centrally located around the Raquette Lake Library,“ says Black. “The events are set up so people can just observe and relax or pick out the events they wish to participate in. Colton Getting Ready for Winterfest January 26-29

The town of Colton is getting ready for its annual Winterfest Weekend scheduled for January 26-29, 2017. The 2017 theme — Get in Gear — invites people to stay active in winter through a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.

A preliminary schedule of activities being organized and supported by the town, Colton-Pierrepont Central School (CPCS), and many others has been posted on the town website by the Winterfest Planning Committee. The festival begins on Thursday, January 26 with the CPCS Class of 2020 hosting a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 pm in the school cafeteria. At 5 pm during the dinner, the town’s Citizen of the Year will be presented. » Continue Reading.
